AREAS AFFECTED: Cook, IL; Kankakee, IL; Will, IL

DESCRIPTION: At 940 AM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located from Coal City to Shorewood to Joliet to New Lenox, moving east at 40 to 60 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. SOURCE...Trained weather spotters. There have meen multiple reports of hail ranging in size from quarter to golf ball size in Joliet with these storms. IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Locations impacted include... Orland Park, Tinley Park, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Lansing, Oak Forest, Harvey, Blue Island, Dolton, Park Forest, Homewood, Matteson, Mokena, Bourbonnais, Frankfort, Bradley, Steger, Manteno, Peotone, Momence, South Holland, Country Club Hills, Midlothian, Hazel Crest, and Richton Park.

The final form taken by a growing cumulus cloud is the cumulonimbus cloud, which is very tall and dense. The tower of a cumulonimbus cloud can soar 23 km into the atmosphere, although most commonly they stop growing at an altitude of 6 km.

Even small cumulonimbus clouds appear very large in comparison to other cloud types. They can signal the approach of stormy weather, such as thunderstorms or blizzards.

Drizzle is precipitation in the form of water droplets which are smaller than raindrops.

Drizzle is characterized by fine, gently falling droplets and typically does not impact human habitation in a negative way.
